Tree Pruning and Crown Reduction in Kitchener

Half the trees we are asked to remove in Kitchener do not need removing. They need the dead wood out, the limb off the roof and some weight taken off the end of a leader that has grown too far.

Pruning is the work that keeps a big tree from becoming a removal. The post-war maples through Stanley Park, Forest Hill, Rosemount and Westmount are at the age where they carry a lot of dead wood, where individual limbs have grown out over roofs further than the wood can support, and where the crown has got heavy enough that a wet snow or an ice storm can split a union. Done properly, pruning deals with all of that and leaves a tree that looks like itself, only safer.

What proper pruning is, and what topping is

Crown reduction shortens the ends of branches back to a suitable side branch that can take over as the new tip. The tree keeps its shape, the cuts are small enough to close, and the overall height and spread come down by a planned amount. Topping is cutting the top off a tree at an arbitrary height, leaving large wounds that never close and stubs that sprout a broom of weakly attached shoots. Topped trees in Kitchener are easy to spot a decade later: they are the ones with rotten tops and a thicket of upright suckers that are more dangerous than the original tree was. We do not top trees, and a contractor who offers to is selling you a removal on an instalment plan.

The pruning jobs that come up most

  • Deadwooding. Removing dead limbs from the crown of a mature tree before they come down on their own. On a large silver maple this is the single most useful thing that can be done.
  • Roof and structure clearance. Lifting or shortening limbs that scrape shingles, sit on the eavestrough or overhang the garage.
  • Clearance from the service wire. Enova Power asks owners to keep the service wire on their property clear and requires three metres of clearance from lines for anyone working. Where a limb is already on the wire, the utility is involved first.
  • Weight reduction. Shortening over-extended horizontal limbs so the lever arm on the union is reduced. This is often what saves a tree with a questionable crotch.
  • Crown thinning and raising. Opening the crown for light and wind, and lifting the lower canopy over a drive, walk or lawn.

Timing

Most pruning can happen any time of year. Maples bleed sap if cut in late winter and early spring, which is messy rather than harmful, and Ontario advises against pruning or wounding oaks between April and November because of oak wilt, which was confirmed in the province in 2023. Dormant-season pruning in late fall and winter has the advantage that the structure is visible without leaves. Light pruning on a city boulevard tree is still the City's call, not yours, and is requested through 519-741-2345.

A pruning quote describes what is coming off and why, in plain terms, so you can see the plan before the climber is in the tree.

Frequently asked questions

Can you just cut the top off to make it shorter?

No, and it would not help. Topping leaves wounds that rot and produces a dense regrowth of weak shoots that make the tree more hazardous within a few years. Crown reduction achieves a lower, lighter tree properly, by cutting back to side branches that can take over.

How much can be taken off at once?

As a rule, a mature tree should not lose more than about a quarter of its live crown in one season, and less is often better. If a tree genuinely needs more than that to be safe, removal is the honest recommendation.

Can you prune the neighbour's branches that hang over my yard?

Branches over your property can generally be cut back to the line, but cutting that damages or kills the tree is a dispute waiting to happen. The sensible route is to talk to the neighbour and have the whole tree pruned properly at once.
